From Tragedy to Legacy

Join us for this fascinating program united by a theme of tragedy: works that were initially met with disappointment, uncertainty, or confusion at their premieres, yet ultimately became enduring masterpieces of the classical repertoire. From the intimate sorrow of Verdi’s La Traviata Prelude to the inexorable triumph of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, each piece reflects music born of adversity and transformed by time. At the heart of the program is Elgar’s deeply emotional Cello Concerto, performed by young Israeli cellist Yarden Cavenor. Together, these works stand as powerful reminders that some of the greatest legacies in music emerged from moments of doubt and tragedy.

Emergence and Resolution

Experience an evening of world premieres in this concert, showcasing new works by young composers who create music to process conflict and build a language for empathy. Their optimism is contrasted against the darker tone of Brahms’s Tragic overture. Created in collaboration with the Young Composers Project from Fear No Music.

Farewell brings the inaugural Classical Northwest festival to a poignant and elegant close. Framed by music of parting and reflection, the program pairs Mozart’s Concerto for Three Pianos with Haydn’s Farewell Symphony. Together, these works offer grace, wit, and gentle introspection, ending the festival not with spectacle, but with warmth, humanity, and a memorable goodbye.
